How to trim your bangs at home

Anybody that has a hairstyle with bangs know its a pain in the ass to pop over to the salon every week to get it trimmed. While we don't recommend it, we know your gonna do it anyway! So we have thrown a few tips together to make sure you do it properly.

Invest in a pair of hairdressing scissors. Using an old pair kitchen scissors is just not good enough. Because your doing it at home by yourself I would suggest doing it on dry hair, wet hair is a little harder to judge how much your taking off as it springs up when dry.

Step 1:- Separate the the bangs with a fine tooth comb from the rest of the hair, and brush into position.

Step 2:-Pull the hair in front of your eyes so you can get a good look. Your fingers will work as a guide as you clamp your bangs between your fingers along the bottom fringe. If you are keeping up on your trims, you will be able to tell if your bangs are cut in a straight line or at an angle.

Step 3:- When making the first cut to your own bangs, make small snipping motions with just the points of your scissors facing upwards. Follow the existing line carefully and only take off a little at a time. Remember, you can always take off more but you can’t put it back on.

Good luck!

Choose the perfect hair color for you

Coloring you hair is the perfect way to make a statement this summer. If you are planning to do it at home, here are a few tips from the Highlights team to make sure that you choose the correct shade for your skin tone.

Always stay within three shades of your natural base color. If your hair is naturally black, chances are bleach blond will not be your ideal color.

The perfect way to judge which color suits you the most is by comparing which type of jewelry looks best on you. If gold suits you, then you are warm toned. People who have a warm undertone in their complexion usually have golden, peachy or olive skin with brown or hazel eyes. Caramel, golden and mahogany colors always look the best.

If silver or white gold looks better, then you are cool toned. Fair or rosy skin is usually the indication that you have cool undertones, with green or blue eyes. Very light blond or ashy hair colors will be the best choice for you.

Dealing with Dry Scalp

Dry Scalp is a problem we see every day. Unlike skin that can be moisturized you scalp is a little harder to get to. Most people mistake dry scalp for dandruff, and start washing their hair with products that end up drying the scalp out even more. Our team recommends using this natural home remedy to get rid of those unsightly flakes.

Remedy
1/2 cup regular 5% vinegar
1/2 cup  warm water
  1. Apply the vinegar and water mixture to dry hair, make sure the scalp is thoroughly covered, Massage for 3 minutes and rinse.
  2. Wash and condition hair as normal.
  3. Finish with vinegar and water mixture, and do a final rinse with desired water temperature.

Repeat this routine until dry scalp disappears. The vinegar mixture adds shine and removes product build up from the hair shaft. Diet is also important way to avoid dry scalp and dandruff. Avoid- candy, soft drinks, pickles and processed food. Replace with a lot of water, fresh fruits, vegetables, sprouts, raw nuts and  wholegrain cereals. With in a few weeks, not only will you notice how luscious your locks are looking, your scalp and complexion will also be glowing!
