Beyonce's New Braided Extensions

Photo: Picasa/WENN

Just over a decade has passed since Beyonce rocked the braided look in Destiny's Child. This week the singer was spotted in New York with her 6 month old daughter Blue Ivy ( the little ones got quite a set of curls!) sporting  long highlighted braids that were piled on top of her head in a ginormous bun. The hairdo is a major change from the natural wavy looks she’s favored for the last few years.

Are salon products better ??

Photo :- L'Oreal Professional

After your last visit to the salon your stylist sold you a bag of goodies that they swore would change your life and daily hair routine. Soon as you get in the car, and the buzz of the salon has worn off, you wonder...." why did I pay twice the price for products I could possibly get at the drugstore??"

Generally salon products are much better then the over the grocery store version. The perfect example is our salon, Highlights in Tel Aviv. We are a dedicated to L'Oreal Professional. L'Oreal is a multimillion dollar company that covers both salon quality products and colors as well as over the counter products. The main difference between the two is the ingredients used. The salon products have a more concentrated ingredients and higher quality protein based conditioners or moisturizing conditioners, thus enabling the conditioner to penetrate deeper into the hair shaft or scalp and lock in moisture. These quality ingredients contribute to the cost of the product and is why they are not typically found in store bought products. While salon products are more expensive then the over the counter version you need to only use a small amount to achieve the desired effect, so in the long run your salon products last 3 times as long as the non professional version.

Is chlorine or sea salt damaging your hair??

Its that time of year again when we’re all hitting the pools and beaches. While that is great, this is the time when we begin receiving calls from customers complaining about and increase in hair loss and damage. Invariably, spending a lot of time in the pool and in the sun tends to be the problem.

For normal hair, constant exposure to chlorine strips the oils, damages the follicle shaft, and fades the hair’s coloring. It goes without saying, that chlorine has the same effect as bleaching your – in fact, it is bleach. So the hue, tint and color will begin to fade and the protein bond structure of the follicle shaft will become weakened – leading to excessive split-ends, frizz and very poor manageability.

For color treated or chemically treated hair, the problem is worse. Chemical treatments typically breakdown the protein bonds rebuilding them into the shape or style you want (think perms, straightening, or relaxing). The bonds have already been weakened and if this is coupled with coloring, chlorine will accelerate damage.
Our recommendation is you try to avoid sun exposure (or wear a hat), use a moisturizing products such as Solar Sublime from L'Oreal Professional. The Shampoo in this range helps to clean the hair and get rid of any chlorine/salt deposits after your trip to the pool or the beach. The second stage in the Solar sublime treatment is a deep conditioner. The After-Sun deep conditioner smells just like fresh peaches, but it's not overpowering. It's just delicious. It's super moisturizing and makes your hair really soft and adds a lot of shine.  Another idea is to avoid chemical treatments as you go into the summer. With a little bit of a tan, few will notice unless you need to cover-up some gray.

Call our Salon to make sure we have it in stock before you come and visit as it fly's off the shelf in summer!

Hair Extensions

Wish you had thick luscious hair like all the Hollywood star? Chances are, if its long and thick.. its packed with hair extensions. If you have been living in the dark for the last 10 years, hair extensions are methods of adding commercial hair to natural hair. Almost anything can be accomplished using  hair extensions,  from adding volume to thinning hair, to lengthening the hair without it looking unnatural.

Over the years we have seen a lot of celebrity hair disasters in the extension department. Britney Spears and Paris Hilton are possibly my top two worst EVER! However not enough credit is given to the rest of the starlets that have fantastic extensions. Probably because most people don't know its not theirs ! Below are a few of my all time favorites who always have picture perfect hair.

Jennifer Lopez is the ultimate hair goddess when it comes to a full head of cascading locks. Judging by the quantity of hair I would say she uses high quality clip in extensions, or weaves. Weaves are long tresses sewn on small tight cornrows where no one can see them. These techniques are popular with african american women, and were recently made popular by the Kardashian Girls.

Lindsay Lohan might be walking disaster, but her hair is always flawless. Lindsay uses the strand by strand application technique by companies such as great lengths. Because her hair is much finer it is easier to get a natural look without breaking the bank. This technique lasts roughly three months and you can wash and style you hair as usual. I would recommend visiting the salon every couple of weeks to make sure you don't have any knots or matted pieces.

Giuliana Rancic from E! definitely won't be ridiculed on fashion police for her hair. She is always on trend with the help of clip in extensions. If your hair is fine, yet long its the perfect way to add body to the sections that are missing hair.

Hair Tip : How to get glossy hair

In a previous post I wrote about the benefits omega 3 for your hair. Salmon is usually everyone's go to fish when they want to maximize their omega 3 intake, but it might not be as beneficial as you think. Most salmon purchased in supermarkets today are farmed. While they still have a decent amount of fatty acids, its no where near the amount found in a wild salmon. Why eat something grown in a farm when there is a delicious, plentiful and inexpensive substitute  : Sardines. The Guyanese people of South America claim that eating sardines will make your hair grow faster and enhance its radiance. If you can't find fresh ones, canned sardines are just as good.

Singer Leona Lewis is of  Guyanese decent, and if her tresses are anything thing to go by I am sure sardines will definitely be on your menu from now on.

Charlize Theron's Shaved Head!

I can't Believe what I am seeing! Charlize Theron was spotted on holiday in Namibia with a SHAVED HEAD! She is set to star in the new Mad Max: Fury Road, which is the fourth film in the 1979 action franchise. There is only one person in my opinion that has ever looked good with a shaved head, and that's Sinéad O'Connor.

What we do : What they do

At Highlights we are lucky to have such an interesting and influential clientele base. I have decide to create a post once a month consisting of a professional and original  hair technique created by our team and combine it with a sneak peak of the life behind the client who wears it.

What We do:-
I will never forget the first time I spoke to Lucy on the telephone. She had been from salon to salon in Israel and was unable to find a hairdresser that understood her. From years of bleaching, her hair was delicate and over processed, and in desperate need of a little TLC. After the first consultation we knew we had to come up with an innovative bleaching technique to keep the lightness that Lucy was looking for, while keeping her hair in good condition. After brainstorming for quite some time we came up with a brilliant idea which enabled us to give Lucy exactly what she was looking for. The technique requires you to apply a deep conditioner on all the pre-bleached hair, and enclose it in tin foil leaving the natural roots protruding outside. Using Blondie's Oil Bleach from L'Oreal Professional  we color the roots. After that we apply a toner. Today Lucy's hair is light, and much healthier then ever before. For more information contact Highlights Hair Salon.

What she does:-
Lucy Fensom, who founded Safe Haven for Donkeys in the Holy Land in 2001, lives and works at the Safe Haven sanctuary in Israel along with her husband, Adi and young son, Robert. Lucy and Adi organize the teams who work at the sanctuary, with the mobile treatment unit and the team of vets who attend the sanctuary, go out with the mobile unit and attend the permanent clinic in Palestinian Territories each week. In May 2002, Lucy was awarded the International Fund for Animal Welfare's "Animal Action Abroad" award for her services, which in conjunction with The Sunday People newspaper, saw Lucy receiving her award at a special presentation at The House of Commons in London. After Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra became their Royal Patron, Lucy received an invitation to The Queens Jubilee Garden Party at Buckingham Palace.

" May 29th arrived and the time came to embark upon a once in a lifetime experience - I actually felt very nervous, mainly about how to curtsy, who to curtsy to and when, not to mention what i should say IF I was spoken to! Amazing though, once I arrived all my nerves were dispersed because I felt so in awe to be there. Walking through Buckingham Palace was so surreal. It was like being in the country side, but smack bang in the middle of London.

" When the Royal Family Made their entrance I suddenly found my self getting quite tearful when I saw the Queen. Kate Middleton was just as exquisite in real life as she is in the pages of glossy magazines. All in all it was truly an awesome day. Looking back it all seems as if i was in a fairytale to have been on the inside of those famous Buckingham Palace gates, as apposed being on the outside looking in. I feel immense gratitude at having been given such a fantastic opportunity!"

MADONNA: Style Icon

Love her or hate her, Madonna is the ultimate style chameleon: nobody does reinvention like Madonna. She's been a blonde, brunette, redhead, curly, straight and cropped. And whatever her look, she's never short of a few copycats.

She Kicked off her world tour a few days ago here in Tel Aviv, and being the avid Madonna fan that I am, I could not miss the special occasion. We arrived in advance to make sure that we were as close to the stage as possible, and for four hours we did not move in inch. As much as I love the Israelis its definitely survival of the fittest in that kind of situation. As people started to pass out all around us, we edged our way to the front. After being elbowed, pushed, and threatened to have my eyes gouged out by a FRECHA with her cheap talons, it was finally showtime!

“I chose to start my world tour in Israel for a special and important reason, You can’t be a fan of mine and not want peace in the world. People of all walks of life, we’re all sons and daughters of the universe and human beings. We all bleed the same color. We all want to love and be loved. It’s easy to say, ‘I want peace,’ it’s another thing to do it. … No conflict can ever be resolved by causing pain to another human being.”

The MDNA Concert was spectacular, with controversial video art, amazing sound, and electrifying atmosphere. If you haven't got tickets GET ONE!

How to trim your bangs at home

Anybody that has a hairstyle with bangs know its a pain in the ass to pop over to the salon every week to get it trimmed. While we don't recommend it, we know your gonna do it anyway! So we have thrown a few tips together to make sure you do it properly.

Invest in a pair of hairdressing scissors. Using an old pair kitchen scissors is just not good enough. Because your doing it at home by yourself I would suggest doing it on dry hair, wet hair is a little harder to judge how much your taking off as it springs up when dry.

Step 1:- Separate the the bangs with a fine tooth comb from the rest of the hair, and brush into position.

Step 2:-Pull the hair in front of your eyes so you can get a good look. Your fingers will work as a guide as you clamp your bangs between your fingers along the bottom fringe. If you are keeping up on your trims, you will be able to tell if your bangs are cut in a straight line or at an angle.

Step 3:- When making the first cut to your own bangs, make small snipping motions with just the points of your scissors facing upwards. Follow the existing line carefully and only take off a little at a time. Remember, you can always take off more but you can’t put it back on.

Good luck!

Choose the perfect hair color for you

Coloring you hair is the perfect way to make a statement this summer. If you are planning to do it at home, here are a few tips from the Highlights team to make sure that you choose the correct shade for your skin tone.

Always stay within three shades of your natural base color. If your hair is naturally black, chances are bleach blond will not be your ideal color.

The perfect way to judge which color suits you the most is by comparing which type of jewelry looks best on you. If gold suits you, then you are warm toned. People who have a warm undertone in their complexion usually have golden, peachy or olive skin with brown or hazel eyes. Caramel, golden and mahogany colors always look the best.

If silver or white gold looks better, then you are cool toned. Fair or rosy skin is usually the indication that you have cool undertones, with green or blue eyes. Very light blond or ashy hair colors will be the best choice for you.

Dealing with Dry Scalp

Dry Scalp is a problem we see every day. Unlike skin that can be moisturized you scalp is a little harder to get to. Most people mistake dry scalp for dandruff, and start washing their hair with products that end up drying the scalp out even more. Our team recommends using this natural home remedy to get rid of those unsightly flakes.

Remedy
1/2 cup regular 5% vinegar
1/2 cup  warm water
  1. Apply the vinegar and water mixture to dry hair, make sure the scalp is thoroughly covered, Massage for 3 minutes and rinse.
  2. Wash and condition hair as normal.
  3. Finish with vinegar and water mixture, and do a final rinse with desired water temperature.

Repeat this routine until dry scalp disappears. The vinegar mixture adds shine and removes product build up from the hair shaft. Diet is also important way to avoid dry scalp and dandruff. Avoid- candy, soft drinks, pickles and processed food. Replace with a lot of water, fresh fruits, vegetables, sprouts, raw nuts and  wholegrain cereals. With in a few weeks, not only will you notice how luscious your locks are looking, your scalp and complexion will also be glowing!

Home Remedies for Dry Hair 1

Dry hair is extremely fragile hair, and is prone to breakage. Working in a salon, I have seen how women man-handle their locks by vigorously towel drying it and creating tonnes of knots and aggressively brushing it because they don't have the patients to do it carefully. The other extreme is when clients are addicted to their flat iron, and go over it several times a week. If you hair is dry try my home made conditioning treatment.

All you need is 1 Avocado, 1 egg yellow, and olive oil. Mix the ingredients together to create a thick rich paste, and apply to mid-lengths and ends of hair . Use a plastic shower-cap to cover the hair add wrap with a hot towel. Leave for 15 minutes. The oils from the avocado and olive oil will add luster and shine, and the protein from the egg yellow will be very beneficial. After you have sat with the treatment on your hair, thoroughly wash it out with a good shampoo.

Blonde it up this summer!

pinned from pinterest

A month at the beach creates the most amazing sun kissed hair color! The secret of this is DE-pigmentation. The UV rays destroy the pigments in your hair, and the salt water helps speed up the bleaching effect. Unfortunately not everyone lives by the seaside, or simply don't have the time to time to achieve this look naturally. Thank god for hair bleach and colors to help achieve this look without having to sweat it out on the beach. Visit your stylist to get the look.

Katy Perrys Purple Hair

Photo courtesy of evil beet gossip
Katy Perry was spotted this weekend at the Coachella music festival in Indigo California. The location was obviously part of the reason Miss Perry chose to dye her hair a purple shade. Seems like she has gone through all the colors of the rainbow in the last few months. With her extensions back in I am sure its not long till she dyes her locks back to the black we all love her with!

Eliminate Frizz this Summer

Frizzy has a tendency to attack both  thin and thick haired alike. If your hair has even the slightest wave or curl, it's susceptible to frizz. With a few tip and tricks from the stylists at Highlights Hair Salon, your wild unruly hair hair will finally be tamed this summer!

We believe that styling products are not enough to to combat frizz alone. You need to start your regime with hydrating shampoos and masque. Liss Ultime from L'Oreal Professional restores softness, controls frizz and provides nutrition to unmanageable, rebellious hair with a de-tangling action.

Comb through the masque while you are in the shower, and finish with a cool rinse (with either just water or vinegar/water). It will close down the cuticle and add tonnes of shine to your locks.
When towel drying your hair, resist rubbing or creating any sort of friction. The best method for drying curly hair is to use a hand towel and squeeze the hair up from ends to roots.
If you are leaving your curls to dry naturally then avoid using a comb! This tends to open them out and turn them into a big frizzy mess.
Depending on the length of your hair, apply a small amount of Spiral Splendour from L'Oreal Professional to your curls. Again, Avoid any friction! Squeeze the product in from the ends to the roots.
After applying the styling product, try not to touch the hair until it has dried. The more you fiddle with it, the more chance you have of creating frizz.

If you blowdry your hair, then apply a heat protection serum like Mythic Oil from L'Oreal Professional.  After heat styling with hot rollers or round brushes, use the cool shot button on your hair dryer to cool down the section you're working with. That will increase the curl or volume you're creating and amplify the shine! . Coolness combats frizzy hair by closing down the cuticle (outer) layer of each hair strand.

Surely you've heard say this before, but it warrants repeating...regular trims prevent split ends. It's stressed so often because of the nature of splitting hairs... they continue on up the hair strand, which Amplifies the frizz. And, once the hairs have split, the only way to repair the damage is to cut the hair above the split. So if it's a bounty of smooth curls you desire, trim it up at least every three months.
