Steam Pod

The New Steam Pod Treatment will be available from April 2013 at Highlights Hair Salon in Tel Aviv. It creates beautifully sleek and manageable tresses with a glamorously glossy, smooth finish. Steampod can be used to create a variety of finishes from smooth and supple looks to soft, tumbling waves.

This new device not only straightens your hair, it also nourishes it at the same time. Using steam to infuse the hair cuticle with pro-keratin (applied prior to using the straightener) the combination results in a healthy frizz free mane.

Spring / Summer Hair Trends 2013

Today’s sunny weather has got us very excited. The weather is turning and spring is almost here so we have been thinking about this season’s hair trends. On the S/S 13 catwalks designers went mad for bright, floral prints. These bold patterns were complimented best with sophisticated, natural looking hair colour and delicate dip-dye.
INOA’s new mocha shades are perfectly in line with the season’s natural looking colour – complimented with a subtle ombré highlight technique for a natural looking sun kissed effect. So, whatever your hair colour, our colourists can help you achieve a natural looking colour which is right on trend.

The History of Hair

Ancient Egypt

Looking back in history, no civilization was as advanced as the Ancient Egyptian. They lasted more then 3000 years, and we can still see remains of greatest achievements today. Throughout history there is no better documentation of hairstyles and accessories then in Ancient Egypt.

The Ancient Egyptian are well known for using shaving instruments to groom and remove the unwanted hair from their bodies and faces, however when it came to the hair on their head, they treated it very differently. It was a status symbol for both men and women.

According to Egyptologist, Joann Fletcher," Human hair was of great importance in ancient Egypt. The rich and the poor of both genders treated their natural hair, or locks obtained elsewhere as a highly pliable means of self-expression."

Hair care was an intricate part of grooming in Egypt, and much time was devoted to styling it. Setting lotions were used, made of bee’s wax and resin. Women braided their hair, or wore it in ringlets. When hair was worn short, it was cut in the severe crop that is the epitome of Egyptian style. Artificial hair extensions were sometimes added to the natural hair.

Cleanliness was a major issue for the Egyptian. In those days they did not have shampoos as we know them today. Instead they used a combination of animal fats, perfumes and ash to clean their locks. Head lice was also a problem they encountered back then, with the oldest head lice discovered on a mummy from Abydos dating back 5000 years.

To avoid lice, the Ancient Egyptian shaved their heads and wore wigs. The Wigs were also used to protect the scalp for burning in the sun. The wigs discovered by archaeologists were lined with date palm fibers, and created out of natural human hair. Wigs and extensions were fashioned with a variety of clever weaves and knots that were secured into or onto the real hair or scalp with beeswax and resins.

The ancient Egyptians hated gray hair and would use vegetable henna, a product still used to this day 5000 years later.

Fighting Frizz 2

Our last Fighting Frizz post was so popular we decided to dig deeper into our bag of tricks to find more home remedies to help tame the fro. Surprisingly the runner up in frizz fighting antidotes is also located in the beverage section at your local supermarket. Beer.

When you rinse your hair with beer, its natural ingredients coat each strand and nourish them. In addition to B vitamins, the proteins found in malt and hops are said to repair damaged hair and boost overall body. If that's not enough, the maltose and sucrose sugars in beer tighten the hair's cuticles for enhanced shine. Its a miracle the the world most popular alcoholic drink has an alternative use!  Dark beers often provide the most nutrients and moisture. When doing the rinse, simply coat your hair with a brewsky and let it sit for a few minutes. When you are ready to rinse, use cold water as this helps to get rid of the smell. ( we don't want your work mates to think your dunking on the job!!)

Red Carpet Favourites of 2013

Grammy Awards 2013

Our Favourite look from the 2013 Grammy Awards was definitely Rihanna's subtle Ombre look. The color complimented both her skin tone, and her dress.

Taylor Swifts Grecian style updo was the perfect choice for her gorgeous gown. The blunt bangs gave an edge to the soft braids.

We loved Jennifer Lopez's look for the Grammy's. The top knot is Jenny's take on the current trendy bun. Its sleek and polished and made the entire look more refined.

Oscars 2013

Reese Witherspoon was our favorite look from the Oscar's 2013. The side swept retro glam waves were the perfect choice for Hollywood's most glamorous red carpet event.

Jennifer Lawrence shone bright at the Oscars. Her soft updo was elegant, sophisticated and guaranteed to be a hit among brides this year.

Dealing with Dry Scalp

Tea tree oil comes from the leaves of the Australian tea tree, the Melaleuca alternifolia. Australia's Aboriginal people have used tea tree oil for centuries as an antiseptic, antibiotic and antifungal treatment, and as natural alternative for treating scalp problems. If you are not allergic to tea tree then add five drops of the oil to your favorite shampoo as a booster to fight flaky scalp. Its healing properties help to nourish the scalp, and leave the hair soft and shiny.

Fighting Frizz

Summer is creeping up on us. I personally cant wait to turn the heaters off and the air cons on, however for more then half of the population here in Israel, summer = humidity = frizzy locks. We have looked into the top remedies to help combat frizz ( and they are all available from the supermarket!!).

With everyone on the go here in Tel Aviv, I often see women leaving the houses with dripping wet hair. By avoiding touching the curls, and leaving them to dry 'au natual', it does reduce frizz dramatically. Problem is that the water here is full of chemicals that dry in your hair. If you often let your curls air dry, try using sparkling water, its a great remedy to eliminate frizz caused by humidity.

After you wash your hair, give it a final rinse with carbonated or sparkling water. The reason carbonated or sparkling water reduces frizz is because of it’s low pH level. In the buildup of hair, the outer layer is comprised of multiple layers of overlapping, scales and is called the cuticle, which acts to protect the inner layers of the strand. Hair is covered by a very thin fluid layer comprised of oil, salt and water, called the mantle, which is slightly acidic. This acid mantle is very important in maintaining the proper moisture balance in our hair and skin. It is also instrumental in making the cuticle scales lie flatter against the surface of the hair shaft, which makes hair smoother and shinier as the flat scales reflect light more coherently. Scales that lie more snugly against the hair shaft also prevent moisture loss, which results in frizz free hair.

Weddings Abroad

Cape Town, South Africa was the latest destination for top stylist at Highlights Hair Salon, Jonathan Jarzin, to work his magic on the beautiful bride Wendy Stulting. Wendy's hair is quite fine, so Jonathan used  XXL volume mousse from Playball on her roots, before using a curling iron to create beach waves synonymous to the Capetonian lifestyle.

" Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities I have visited in the World. Its natural beauty combined with the carefree, easygoing lifestyle was my inspiration. I wanted to create a look that was effortless and aesthetic."

After the ceremony Jonathan decided to let Wendy's hair down.  He secured the cascading curls into a side swept style.

Mazal Tov to Wendy and Chris. May they bring joy to each others lives for years to come.

Sombre

Hey peeps, sorry I have been so distant over the past few months! Its been super busy in the salon and I have been neglecting my blog :( But with the new year comes new resolutions, and I promise to keep you updated on all the latest hair trends for 2013!)

First up for 2013 is "Sombre". Created by Kim Vo and the Schwarzkopf team, Sombre combines the entire flavor of the ombre technique ( pioneered by Drew Barrymore), without the strong contrasts. It is the perfect technique for clients who are looking for the next big trend or would like to evolve from the basic ombre to a new, inspired look! The lighter ends fade gradually into the root so there’s no harsh line when the hair grows out. It’s a gradual progression from dark to light, making the color appear seamless and giving your hair a sun kissed look. Ideally I prefer to do this on virgin ( non colored ) hair, but colored hair is also suitable.  Book your appointment now!
